Optimus Prime is the much loved and respected leader of the Autobots. Originally a civilian, he was selected by the Matrix to command the forces, the first responsibility in a number of heavy burdens to shoulder. Another one is his bringing of the Transformer’s conflict to Planet Earth.

The total opposite of his mortal enemy Megatron, every death, whether Cybertronian or human, weighs heavily on his ‘mind.’

However, he conceals this side of him to his fellow Autobots, and never succumbs to despair.

The Autobots need a determined, clear-thinking and charismatic leader, and this is exactly what Optimus Prime gives them. And it was this kind of leadership that dramatically turned the tide of the Great War.

On the battlefield, there are very few that can match up to Optimus Prime’s prowess and skills. His powerful energon-axe and ion blaster are deadly weapons, and he is easily the strongest of any Autobot his size. What he lacks in raw firepower, he more than makes up with sheer determination and guts.

He would even go far as to sacrifice his life in order to safeguard his fellow Autobots or those under his care and supervision, and has done so on a few occasions.

In fact, his only real weakness is his compassion for his fellow comrades, something which the Decepticons have gleefully taken advantage of – time and time again, although not all of these attempts were particularly successful.

Optimus Prime carries within him the sacred Matrix of Leadership. Before being recreated into a Powermaster, his robot mode split into 3 parts:

1. A combat deck
2. A sentient robot module, known as the Brain Center
3. A special wheeled drone module known as Roller

And even though he can function as 3 independent modules, a severe blow or injury to any one of the above modules, is always felt by the other two as well.

Just before the Great War broke out on Cybertron, Prime was a well-recognized Transformer, famous for his skills in the highly competitive Infraformers Sharp-shooting competition. When the war began, he quickly became noted for his leadership qualities.

On an important mission with the Triggerbots to prevent Megatron from claiming the Underbase, Optimus Prime was compelled to jettison the enormous databank into space, to stop anyone from acquiring its power. With this action, he proved his wisdom and bravery to the Autobot Council of Elders, who were keen on appointing him to lead the Autobot forces.
