Optimus Prime has within him the sacred Matrix of Leadership. Before he was rebuilt into a Powermaster, Prime’s robot mode separated into three different parts:

1. A special wheeled drone – Roller
2. A combat deck
3. A sentient robot module – Brain Center

And although he can easily function as 3 independent modules, a critical injury to any one of these modules can always be felt by the other two.

Before the Great War erupted in Cybertron, Optimus Prime was quite a famous Transformer, known for his tremendous skills in the Infraformers Sharp-shooting competition. And when the war broke out, he was soon recognized for his outstanding leadership qualities.

While on a mission with the Triggerbots to thwart Megatron from taking control of the Underbase, he was literally forced to jettison the leviathan databank into space, to prevent anyone from acquiring its power. With this brave move, he proved his great wisdom once and for all to the Autobot Council of Elders, who immediately appointed him the leader of the Autobots.

During the arrival of the Decepticons from a future time period, Prowl, Ratchet and Optimus Prime were displaced into Limbo.

After his return, Prime observed how poorly the Autobots functioned in his absence. This caused him much depression, he even went so far as seek leadership from arch rival and Decepticon leader Megatron, in an attempt to rectify the situation.

He also began to wonder if he was too important to the Autobots, and if they could perform without a hitch, should he fall. To dispel his doubts and fears, Wheeljack planned on faking Prime’s death in order to teach the rest of the Autobots how to properly fend for themselves.

However, while Optimus Prime was in the process of setting up a duplicate and damaged version of himself to leave behind for the Autobots to come across, Megatron gave orders for the Predacons to attack him.

After a period of highly effective leadership, Prime challenged Megatron to a video game duel for full possession of a special super fuel. Although the former was victorious, Megatron sneakily implemented a cheat, which enabled him to re-enter the game.

Optimus Prime however, was able to easily defeat him once again. That said, in doing so, he also ended up destroying many of the game sprites.

Consequently, he refused to accept his victory, as he felt that he had performed a terrible action that compromised his beliefs on the preservation of all forms of life, which would be something he’s never had done, had the challenge been real.

So in accordance with the rules and regulations of the game, Optimus Prime’s body exploded and he instantly died.

Unfortunately, the Autobot surgeon’s efforts to bring him back to consciousness failed, and his body was finally launched into space.
